Our Trip to Croke Park which included Travel Training. (2nd July 2015)

Miriam Buckley & I (Maureen O Shea) boarded the train in Thurles, Sarah Scully, Tina Hynes, Lisa Quigley & the clients boarded the train in Templemore. We eventually got to Houston station and then we got the Luas into O Connell Street.

We got the no 13 bus out to Drumcondra, then we walked down Jones Road to Croke Park, we went in the wrong entrance to Croke Park unfortunately. Then we had to walk up to the traffic lights again, and then we found the right entrance. We went in under the stand & we saw 2 Hugh Hurley’s.

Then we saw where the president of Ireland & the Taoiseach park their cars. Then we were brought into the Tipperary changing room.

We saw the jerseys hanging up, then we went out to the warm up room and the tour guide told us that there was netting on the ceiling to protect the lights as they kept getting broken and there was Perspex on the windows as they kept getting broken as well.

Then we were brought pitch side, and we were brought up to the presentation area, we got our photos taken up there. We also saw where the subs sit. Then we went up on as escalator to a higher area. We also saw the Opel room where the VIP guests go. This is called this as it is owned by Opel cars. We also saw very expensive delph, knives and forks lay out on the tables as the VIP guest go there.

Then we went out to a viewing area and we saw the whole city of Dublin. Then we went down an escalator again and we had tea and biscuits in the café. Then we walked up Jones road. We got the no 13 bus again into O Connell Street. Then we waited for the traffic lights to change to the green man to cross the road.

We broke up into various groups of 3 clients per staff member. Stuart O Mahoney, myself (Maureen O Shea and Miriam Buckley were with Sarah Scully. I went into HMV to enquire about a CD or Dvd of Declan Nerney but they were sold out. Then Stuart, Miriam, Sarah and I went into Arnotts then some went into Pennies & Dunnes. Then we went for lunch, Stuart, Miriam, Sarah and I went to a place called The Church as it is a converted church. The rest of the group went to McDonalds.

Then we got the Luas back to Houston station, the Luas was packed, some of the staff had to get extra tickets for the train, Sarah Scully was my companion, some of the clients and staff got off in Templemore and Miriam Buckley & I got off in Thurles and we all had a great time and we will certainly like to do this again.

We left St Cronan’s in 2 cars at 10 .15 am. 10 of us went. We arrived approx., 11am. We parked the cars in White water car park and T.K Max car park. We purchased tickets for the cars, & then we went shopping, some of us went to H& M, Golden Discs, Penny’s, we had dinner in the food court upstairs in the Whitewater shopping centre and some of us went to a restaurant out in the town.

We went into Newbridge Silverware, we also went into the museum, and we saw lots of memorabilia of famous celebrities e.g Princess Diana & Grace Kelly, we looked at the jewellery downstairs, then we returned to the cars & came back to St. Cronan’s for the buses to take us home to Thurles & Templemore & we really enjoyed our trip to Newbridge.

This was compiled by Maureen O Shea and the service- users that went on the trip.

Public Consultation on ‘Draft Interim Standards for New Directions, Services and Supports for Adults with Disabilities’

October 8th, 2014

The HSE is publishing “Draft Interim Standards for New Directions, Services and Supports for Adults with Disabilities” for public consultation for a period of 6 weeks from 8th September to 17th October 2014.

These Draft Interim Standards arise from recommendations in “New Directions, the review of HSE Day Services and Implementation Plan”, published in 2012. New Directions sets out twelve supports that should be available to people using ‘day services’. It proposes that ‘day services’ should take the form of individualised outcome-focussed supports to allow adults using those services live a life of their choosing in accordance with their own wishes, needs and aspirations.

St. Cronans services have been asked to bring this public consultation to the attention of our service users and their families. The National Disability Authority has been working on the draft standards and their website contains a number of links to the draft standards.  An Easy to Read Guide to the Draft Interim Standards for New Directions has been prepared for this public consultation. The Easy to Read Guide is also available in four separate parts, formatted for use in facilitated consultation sessions.

You can download the following documents below:

Documents to support the use of the Easy to Read Guide in facilitated consultation sessions, divided into 4 parts, formatted for use in facilitated consultation sessions, and also available in a narrated video version:

Memorial Garden

November 14th, 2013

Memorial Garden

The willows group started this project in September 2012.  The group designed the layout of the garden themselves.  This included a patio area, a bench to sit on and a low maintenance garden which was planted with shrubs and a mulch of bark chips was placed around them.  The clients made the bench themselves and the bird table to encourage wildlife.

We made a raised flower bed which was planted with summer bedding plants which they grew from seed themselves.  The clients now enjoy sitting and relaxing in the peaceful surroundings.  The group decided to dedicate this garden to a deceased former member of the group and a plaque was erected in his memory.
